CHARACTER INFO

Character: Riku
Canon: Kingdom Hearts, end of the Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Age: 17

Background Information: Here

Personality:

1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Riku has almost always been that cool, calm, collected sort of individual who looks at problems in front of him and does his best to solve them while maintaining that appearance. This is used to help his more emotion-driven friends and companions, to be the voice of reason in tough situations or try to figure things out by thinking it over. Not to say that he doesn't allow his heart to guide him or always manages to keep his cool. More that he tries to balance it a little better when his friends are struggling so that he support them. When he is experiencing emotional turmoil, he's not afraid to show it and allow others to help him in return.

He's that responsible and reliable friend, always there when people need him and ready to lend a hand. Not afraid to step up when faced with something incredibly dangerous in order to fill in the weaknesses of his friends. Or speak up when he knows one of them has to follow their heart into the unknown, knowing that no matter the distance they'll be connected. A stark contrast of the jealousy that plagued him when he watched Sora get new friends just a few years earlier. On the other hand, Riku holds a lot of belief in his friends in return. Knowing that they will have his back when he needs them.

Yet despite how much he matured in the last few years, he still allows himself to be a kid and get involved in games or competitions with his friends. He still enjoys challenging his friends in both terms of being lighthearted as well as reaching beyond the limitations they may be experiencing in more serious situations. He can be found teasing them playfully or just enjoying being in their company.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Loyalty and protectiveness is practically worn on his sleeve like a banner that extends to all of his friends and the people he cares about. There was nothing he won't do for them, even if it means putting himself in the way of immense danger to protect them. In the past, Riku didn't hesitate to kidnap Roxas in order to make Sora whole so his friend could wake up, or embrace more darkness in order to work in the shadows. Riku would dive into the unknown in order to get Sora back or risk his very life in order to protect someone, with his group of friends being much bigger now.

However, leaning too hard into protecting that what is important to him is what led him down the path of darkness in the first place. He has discovered that his strength alone isn't enough, and as such, knows when it's time to use the support of his friends or allow them to take their own journey over being too protective of them. It's what had him stepping back and letting Sora go alone to find Kairi, even though he couldn't possibly know what would happen using the Power of Waking to accomplish that feat. Choosing to put his belief in Sora's strength and heart, and then do what he could in order to bring Sora back after his disappearance.

For a majority of his life, Riku has been curious about the world beyond his little islands - worlds beyond his. It was the driving force behind a lot of his actions during his younger years, including leading to many mistakes that he's led. While he still has that curiosity - it comes with a hint of maturity that his world is part of a bigger one. Yet he's always curious to learn about the worlds he visits, the people he meets. Ready and willing to learn more, to grow into a better person so that he never make similar mistakes again.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

There was a lot that Riku messed up, as it helped them start on this journey and he allowed himself to be manipulated by others, encouraging the darkness inside of him. It was a whole bunch of things that he regretted greatly and tried to make up while also hiding away in shame. While those regrets still exist in him, Riku has decided to learn from them - accept them as part of him and do better. He is aware that he can't go back and undo them, and that even if he could that he shouldn't. So they have their place in his heart and his history, no matter if others forgive him - they aren't something he'll ever forget.

Despite his journey and growth, Riku still gets upset and angry. He allows himself to feel these emotions without letting them take over completely, but doesn't try to deny them either. Upon learning Aqua had helped him in the Dark Realm, and Mickey hid that from him, he was angry about it or when his Replica gave up his own existence to give Naminé a chance to live. He's also a bit too willing to give up his life to save his friends, as he stepped in front of a terrible attack in attempt to motivate Sora. While he has come a long way towards stability in his life, it doesn't mean he doesn't still face some insecurities or is unshakeable, just that he has worked through them and is better equipped to handle them now. That he accepts his flaws and darkness both that make him appear so confident and calm.

Riku can tend to pull away and isolate himself at times, thinking he has to take on things alone and while it's much less frequent than before, is still a flaw of his. After his actions early on, he spent a lot of time hiding away from Sora and Kairi and only working from the shadows to help them. While he makes up for this and struggles to get better at it during his Mark of Mastery exam, there remain moments where he steps out from beside his friends to try to do things alone. Such as trying to save Sora from the hoard of Heartless at the end of KH3 or going on to Quadratum alone ahead of the others.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

- He knows how to build a raft, and likely to how to sail one.
- He could absorb dreams/Dream Eaters in DDD, eventually becoming one of Sora's Dream Eaters.
- Can pilot the Gummiship.
- Immune to manipulation by outside forces like Xehanort/Ansem.
- Has been told he has mastered control of the darkness in him.
- Is the first Keyblade Master of the Destiny Island trio.
- Given his Keyblade from Terra.

Counter Blast: Sends foes flying after a successful block.
Double Duel: A series of spinning Keyblade attacks performed with Mickey. (Only performed with Mickey)
Shadowbreaker: A buzzsaw move that attacks with both light and dark. (Performed with Mickey - could be performed with others who wield light)

ARMADA SELECTION

Riku could fit into both Paladins and Corsairs. His character arc has taken him through rough times where he was manipulated and used by dark forces, worked in the shadows doing what needed to be done, and allowed him to walk a middle path between light and darkness. He wields them both and accepts all of this as part of him, striking a balance within himself so that he has become the person he is today. Ultimately and most recently, Riku does align himself with the light - alongside other light wielders like Sora, Kairi, Mickey and many others to fight against those of the darkness like Xehanort and the Organization XIII.

So I feel he could belong to either Armada easily enough, if the Armadas were more unbalanced. However, his current canon point would lend to him leaning more Paladin in my opinion.
